Lack of clean water, poor hygiene, malnutrition, substandard or costly health care - these basic causes lead to the death of millions of children under 5 every year. ADRA’s work worldwide is changing lives:

  • Immunization has saved more than 20 million lives in the past two decades, yet about 30 million children worldwide still lack access to routine immunization each year. ADRA’s work in sub-Saharan Africa, where immunization rates are below 30 percent at times, brings lifesaving prevention to millions.
  • In Madagascar, 75 of every 1,000 children die before the age of 5, 20% from malaria. ADRA is training mothers in health and nutrition, sanitation, and mosquito net use for children, ensuring a better quality of life for families.
  • Every minute, a woman dies from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Four million newborns die in their first month of life, mostly from infections, birth asphyxia, premature birth, and unsafe delivery practices. ADRA’s projects focus on proper care before, during, and after delivery, giving women and children a chance to lead healthy lives.
  • Many children are barely clinging to life when they come to ADRA’s health posts in Ethiopia. Field doctors treat them with antibiotics, folic acid, deworming medicine, and Plumpy’nut, a therapeutic peanut-based food supplement used in emergency malnutrition cases. Basic remedies are saving lives.
  • In Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, many rural families subsist on animal fat, milk, and milk products. Consequently, a number of children display vitamin A and iron deficiencies. Vitamin A deficiency, in particular, can lead to blindness, and 70 percent of children who become blind from it die within 12 months. ADRA is equipping families with tools and seeds, helping them grow nutrient-rich vegetables.
  • In Afghanistan, 85,000 young children die every year from diarrhea. For many families, water sources are not only far away from their homes, but also unclean and unsafe for consumption. In the northern province of Jawzjan, ADRA is drilling hand-pump wells to bring clean water to villages, thereby reducing disease and saving the lives of young children.
