ADRA Vanuatu Starts First Project

Vanuatu is one of the poorest countries in Melanesia. Less than 50 percent of the population has access to safe, clean water. Often communities must get their water from creeks that dry up from lack of rainfall, or become polluted from heavy storms and cyclones.

The new ADRA office in Vanuatu has commenced its first project, installing water systems in two communities on Tanna Island. ADRA Vanuatu, with funding from ADRA Australia, is working with community members to install spring-fed gravity water systems in the Tanna Island communities of Imafen and Leapuku. ADRA will also provide information on how to maintain the water systems and education on health and basic hygiene. This project will impact the lives of 1260 people. ADRA established a permanent office in Vanuatu in February 2008.
