ADRA @ Work
South America
Summer 2011
BRAZIL: Following heavy rainstorms and destructive flooding in several cities throughout southern Brazil, ADRA immediately assisted victims by distributing food baskets and hygiene kits to 500 households. The distribution benefited approximately 2,500 people in the southern states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. Each food basket can sustain a family of five for eight days. In addition, hygiene kits can support a family of five for one month.
COLOMBIA: Following recent flooding and mudslides in Colombia, ADRA responded by providing beans, rice, oil, corn, sugar, pots, spoons, cups, water containers and other cooking supplies, soap, toothbrushes, clothes, towels, mattresses, and bedding in a two-week supply, meeting the initial needs of the storm victims.
EL SALVADOR: Thanks to ADRA, more than 150 vulnerable children in schools across El Salvador began their school year with desperately needed supplies. This project directly benefited students of low-income families who are attending grades one through six in 10 select schools. Working in coordination with the principals of each institution, ADRA delivered supply kits to each school, which included notebooks, color pencils, glue, scissors, pens, pencils, a pencil sharpener, and a ruler.
NICARAGUA: In the rural Nicaraguan region of Nueva Segovia, ADRA has been promoting “green” farming initiatives to local farmers across 150 communities. These ADRA-designed classes teach best practices in agriculture and nutrition, promoting techniques that will dramatically reduce the use of drip irrigation and optimize the use of less water.
