sierra_leone
Sierra Leone: ADRA’s Women’s Income Sustainability and Empowerment (WISE) project is helping more than 6,000 women. By receiving literacy and numeracy skills; increasing their income-generation; and raising community awareness about the impact of domestic violence, female genital mutilation, and women’s health issues.
liberia
Liberia: Through ADRA’s ongoingfunctional adult literacy program in northeastern Liberia, an estimated 700 people are improving their literacy, numeracy, and organizational skills — tools that will help them to manage their small businesses more efficiently. ADRA is also providing agricultural aid to increase the participants’ access to food and their household incomes. The 18-month project is set to conclude in March 2010.
nigeria
Nigeria: In the northwestern region of the country, ADRA is implementing its Healthy Minds project, a multi-year project that will improve the education of thousands of students in the region by providing much-needed books. By the project’s completion, more than 11,000 youth will have gained access to much needed educational materials.
kenya
Kenya: ADRA’s Anti-FGM (female genital mutilation) project is changing attitudes and behavior toward FGM in practicing communities within the country’s western and northeastern regions. ADRA is working with partners to conduct anti-FGM workshops, meetings, and public campaigns to raise awareness. ADRA is helping young women and girls gain the strength to say no to the practice, and educating their communities in order to better protect them.
tanzania
Tanzania: A new project is helping young people who have albinism to fight discrimination by providing them with educational materials and raising awareness about the condition. ADRA will help participants improve their self-confidence, leadership abilities, and job skills. In addition, ADRA is working with the Tanzania Albino Society, government authorities, and other nongovernmental organizations to better assist albinos in the targeted region.
madagascar
Madagascar: ADRA recently completed a four-month intervention to meet the nutritional needs of more than 18,000 families suffering from food shortages in southern Madagascar. The project, which was implemented in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme, and other organizations, distributed more than 4,000 tons of food to vulnerable households and provided farm tools to beneficiaries through its food-for-work activities.
