ADRA is continually responding to natural and man-made emergencies that leave families homeless and without the means of earning an income. These situations seldom make the TV news or U.S. newspapers, yet with your support, ADRA is there.
Earlier this year, ADRA delivered blankets to families suffering from harsh weather in Peru. We provided emergency food rations to 2,000 families in Fiji after devastating floods in January. Emergency hygiene and food parcels were distributed to stranded families during the extreme snow and ice throughout much of Europe in February. After a devastating magnitude-6.9 earthquake in the Philippines, ADRA provided emergency food to survivors.
Why do we need your help so urgently? These traumatized children, women, and men turn to ADRA for hope, care, and support. And ADRA turns to you, our faithful, compassionate supporters, who enable us to be in the midst of the desperate situations throughout the world.
Just a few weeks ago in Assam, India, severe flooding and landslides affected nearly 1 million children, women, and men, with close to 400,000 of these individuals forced to live in relief camps. Many of these already extremely poor families lost what little they owned. Wells that once provided clean drinking water have been contaminated.
Simple homes made of bamboo poles and mud collapsed under the rushing torrent of four feet of water. Individuals are suddenly at greater risk of malaria, skin infections, and diarrhea. As rice fields were flooded, too many lost their current harvest, and their fields are now contaminated with sand that will make their fields unfertile for 10 years.
ADRA has responded by providing families with 20-liter (5-gallon) lidded buckets, water purification tablets, and mosquito nets. What will the future hold for these families? With your help, ADRA plans to provide oral rehydration therapy for small children, emergency sanitation facilities, and well and agriculture rehabilitation.
