ADRA’s ministry follows the example of Christ, who saw great need and brought healing to the suffering. Whether working with communities or individuals, ADRA strives to improve their quality of life.
Individuals living in poverty suffer greater health problems than the rest of the world. They have higher rates of disease and limited access to health care. And many people in the world literally do not have any access to health care. Clinics and hospitals do not exist in their communities. Doctors are not found where they live. And too often, families that do have a clinic within a two- to three-hour walking distance have no funds with which to pay for care or medicines.

Hyneise’s Story: "I wondered if my baby would live; she hardly moved as her head grew bigger and bigger," Velma says sadly. "Months after she was born, the ADRA worker visited my home. He said she needed surgery." Velma lifts her head and smiles as she continues. "And now, she walks!" Velma is talking about Hyneise, her 22-month-old daughter, who was born with hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. ADRA made it possible for Hyneise to obtain surgery that placed a shunt in her brain to drain the fluid. Now focusing on physical therapy, the ADRA workers in western Kenya have built parallel bars in Hyneise’s backyard.
"All she wants to do is walk with the bars," laughs Velma. "It is wonderful to see her so happy; she even laughs now!"
ADRA’s worldwide health ministry is diverse, from providing care for toddlers such as Hyneise to launching ADRA’s mobile medical boat that travels through the Solomon Islands providing care for individuals who have no other access to treatment. We follow the example of Christ, who saw great need and brought healing to the suffering.
