In too many places in our world, children, women and men live on less than $1 a day. This extreme poverty affects all areas of their lives, depriving them of food, shelter, medical care, the ability to work, and education.
Here are a few ways we are making a difference.
- ADRA's "Let's Fight AIDS in Malawi" project gives food to orphans and vulnerable children, training and supplies to farming groups, and home-based care to the chronically ill. As people become able to care for themselves, many are compelled to give back to their community.
"...[T]wo things are difficult. The first thing is raising enough money on my own to look after the kids properly. The second thing is bringing up the children. . . molding them, guiding them on how to behave." - Grace, Malawi
Through her participation in the ADRA AIDS program, Grace has enough maize for her family and is able to sell the rest as a source of income. This leaves her free to be able to be a good mother to her children.
- Approximately 50 percent of the world's hungry are in farm households. ADRA's agriculture programs help farmers, especially those with small farms, to provide for their basic needs and improve their quality of life.
When recent droughts wreaked havoc on agriculture in northeastern Brazil, ADRA introduced a polyculture program to the area. This program teaches farmers to use multiple crops in the same space, making the farms more productive and helping to improve the lives of those who depend on them.
"[With polyculture programs, we] work in a way that helps everything at the same time." - Jose, Sao Paulinho, Brazil
- Children and women are severely impacted by hunger and poverty. Programs like ADRA's Women Empowerment Project (WEP), goat exchange, and adult literacy classes help women care for themselves and their families.
"I am very grateful for this project; it has changed my life." - Meliya, Malawi. ADRA's WEP helped Meliya set up a vegetable garden to feed her family and provide a source of income. She is also taking advantage of adult literacy classes and an ADRA goat exchange program to improve her life and those of her grandchildren.
Through these and similar programs, ADRA is working to end the vicious cycle of poverty. Today, you can help ADRA reach out and make a significant impact in the lives of the poorest of the poor.
