“Brazil has not seen a flood like this in nearly 60 years,” said Landerson Santana, director of the ADRA Northeast Brazil office, following heavy rains in May that left large areas of northern and northeastern Brazil under water. “Those who have been left homeless by this disaster are the ones who are most at risk.”

One of those affected was Fátima da Silva,* a resident of Barreirinha, a community located in the state of Amazonas near one of the many Amazon River tributaries, where the waters flooded eight of every 10 homes, including Fátima’s. The flooding was so extensive, the Brazilian Civil Defense reported, that as of May 28, nearly 427,000 people had been displaced from their homes; the flood affected 485 municipalities in 12 states in Brazil, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
