SILVER SPRING, Md.—On Monday, December 14, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) joined Shepherd’s Table, a non-profit organization located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland just six miles away from the ADRA International headquarters, providing warm meals and other necessities for those in need during the holiday season.

“As this is the season of giving, we wanted to provide a hands-on, tangible experience for those who work at ADRA International, where they could personally give back within their own community,” said John Torres, senior public relations manager for ADRA International.  “With Shepherd’s Table’s years of experience, and excellent track record, we knew that this would be a great partnership, and a fantastic opportunity to do just that.”

The event took place at Progress Place, the Shepherd’s Table multi-purpose community center, where ADRA staff spent the early evening, greeting the center’s more than 100 nightly dinner guests, and preparing and serving meals for them, many who are without homes or lack the means to obtain basic supplies for themselves.

“It was a really good experience,” shared Heidi Straw, an ADRA employee who participated in the event.  “With all of the work that ADRA does around the world, it’s easy to forget all the needs right here at home.  It also gave us a chance to get to know organizations that are making a difference in the local community, and work side by side with them.”

Shepherd’s Table was organized in 1983 to address the needs of homeless people in Silver Spring, forming Montgomery County’s first soup kitchen. Since then, the organization has expanded, offering a range of services, such as the Shepherd’s Table Clothes Closet, which offers guests free, gently-used clothing, their mobile medical clinic, and Shepherd’s Table’s Resource Center, which allows the homeless to collect their mail, make phone calls, or receive assistance with Social Services.
