The report titled “Success Story: Emergency Relief in the Philippines” highlighted the achievements of ADRA’s USAID-funded project in response to a series of disasters, which affected more than 10 million people. “By funding ADRA’s relief distribution program, [USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance] USAID/OFDA is providing much-needed humanitarian assistance, while also helping families recover from the storms’ effects,” wrote Amber Callaway during a USAID visit to observe ADRA’s response in the Philippines. Immediately after the storms, ADRA began assessing the emergency needs of survivors, finding that many families had lost everything, while others showed signs of disease, particularly to their skin, due to contaminated water. With the financial backing of several donors, including USAID, the German Government, Japan Platform, the Government of Aragon in Spain, ADRA International and other network offices, ADRA distributed emergency relief supplies, such as food, cooking sets, hygiene kits and bedding supplies for families in the country’s affected regions. To implement the response, ADRA worked closely with the Government of the Philippines’ Regional Office of Department of Social Welfare and Development to identify beneficiary families among those displaced to evacuation centers. Due to the funding provided by the USAID/OFDA , ADRA was able to give aid to an estimated 90,535 people. ADRA continues to assist survivors, many of whom still reside in evacuation centers and temporary relocation centers, by working in partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to distribute food, and with other entities, such as Spain’s Provincial Government of Aragon and the Government of Germany to provide medical assistance and water purification within the affected regions. Since Tropical Storm Ketsana struck the Philippines last September, followed by two typhoons, ADRA has assisted more than 240,000 beneficiaries, with a total funding of $1,049,000, provided by 28 donors from 18 different countries. Follow ADRA on Twitter and Facebook to get the latest information as it happens. ADRA is a non-governmental organization present in 125 countries providing sustainable community development and disaster relief without regard to political or religious association, age, gender, race or ethnicity.
