SILVER SPRING, Md. — In southeastern Sri Lanka, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is giving residents in the Ampara District improved access to clean water by connecting them to an existing water pipeline. “By providing beneficiaries with adequate access to clean water, we are improving the health of their communities and their economic development,” said Edgar Castillo, country director for ADRA Sri Lanka. “Women, who are often the ones in charge of bringing water for their families, will be able to spend that time caring for their families and participating in income-generating activities.” Working with the Sri Lankan National Water Supply and Drainage Board and other government authorities, ADRA is implementing the Connecting Users to the Pottuvil Pipeline Project (CUPP), connecting beneficiary families to the local water pipeline by providing the installation of an additional 2.2 miles (4 kilometers) of extension lines. The project is targeting nearly 1,500 households and 60 public places, including schools, health centers, community centers, religious places, and government departments, benefiting approximately 5,000 people. CUPP is funded by the Irish Red Cross (IRC) for an estimated value of $235,830 and is scheduled to end in June of 2010. Since the 2004 tsunami, ADRA Sri Lanka has been working in the Pottuvil division of Sri Lanka, providing emergency water trucking services, creating semi-permanent water sources, helping families improve their basic living conditions.
